In ranking these companies, I will be using their current ‘Direct Written Premiums’ recorded. Direct written premiums are the total of premiums written by an insurance company within a given period before considering reinsurance ceded.

So, an insurance company gets more premiums when they are good at what they do and as well considered to be the best, for being able to drive in more clients (insured) to their company.

The health insurance industry in 2020 recorded a direct written premium of $1.25trillion and these 10 companies which I will be listing out, wrote 55.3% of it according to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC).

With the data given by NAIC in 2020, here is my list of the top 10 best health insurance companies.

The Independence Health Group is an insurance company based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in the United States with various subsidiaries under it.

This insurance company offers a wide range of services like commercial, Medicare & Medicaid medical coverage, pharmacy benefits management, third-party benefits administration, and workers’ compensation.

It’s a parent company of Independence Blue Cross.

Direct Written Premiums: $20.1 billion

  1. Molina Healthcare

Molina Healthcare is located in Long Beach, California, United States. It also serves at a multi-state level, providing health insurance to families and individuals through government-sponsored health care programs like Medicaid and Medicare.

States this company provides health plans are Michigan, Wisconsin, New York, Washington, South Carolina, California, Florida, Illinois, Texas, Utah, Ohio, New Mexico, and Puerto Rico.

Direct Written Premiums: $21.4 billion

  1. Cigna Health

Cigna Health is a multinational health insurance company located in Bloomfield, Connecticut, United States.

With various subsidiaries under it, providing health insurance and related products and services plans to majorly employers and other groups.

Primarily, Cigna Health offers health insurance coverage to individuals in the United States and some targeted international markets.

Direct Written Premiums: $31.8 billion

  1. Health Care Service Corporation (HCSC)

HCSC is a customer-owned health insurance company based in Chicago, Illinois, USA. With its subsidiaries and affiliates, it offers a large variety of health insurance products and related services.

These subsidiaries and affiliates are Medecision, Dental Network of America, HCSC Insurance Service Company, TriWest Healthcare Alliance, Dearborn Group, Availity, and Prime Therapeutics.

This health insurance company only serves 5 states in the United States, which includes Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Montana, and Illinois.

Direct Written Premiums: $42 billion

  1. CVS Health

CVS Health is a health insurance company that owns CVS Pharmacy and other retail pharmacies. It is located in Woonsocket, Rhode Island, United States.

This company has served about 23.4 million medical members.

Direct Written Premiums: $69 billion

  1. Humana

Humana is a health insurance company located in Louisville, Kentucky, in the United States.

Humana provides more innovative solutions and resources that help an individual live a healthier life on his/her terms.

Direct Written Premiums: $73.9 billion

  1. Centene Corporation

Centene Corp is a publicly-traded and health insurance company located in St. Louis, Missouri, in the United States.

They operate on local health plans, providing a wide range of health insurance coverage.

Direct Written Premiums: $75 billion

  1. Anthem, Inc.

Anthem Inc. is another health insurance company formed by two companies, WellPoint, based in California, and Anthem, based in Indianapolis, which was merged in 2004.

Anthem is known to be one of the United States largest health insurers, providing health care services in 10 states.

Direct Written Premiums: $76.9 billion

KFF, which the company refers to itself instead of Kaiser Family Foundation which was a non-profit organization in San Francisco, California, USA.

KFF main focuses are the health care issues facing the United States and also acts as a U.S. role in global policymaking.

They offer a lot of health services in the health insurance industry and serve only the U.S.

  1. UnitedHealth Group

UnitedHealth is our number on our list. The health insurance company is based in Minnetonka, Minnesota, in the United States.

It serves at a multinational level providing health care products and insurance services.

Direct Written Premiums: $176.7 billion

It’s great to finally know the top 10 best health insurance companies in the health insurance industry. One thing for sure is that these companies have indeed offered great services in their industry and it was nice knowing them.
